ISO 9001:2026 Has Been Officially Published

On September 16, 2026, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) officially published ISO 9001:2026 – Quality management systems — Requirements, 11 years after ISO 9001:2015 was issued.

For organizations currently applying ISO 9001:2015, the key priority at this stage is to identify the areas affected by the new edition, determine the scope of required updates, and prepare a transition plan in line with the new timeline.

ISO 9001:2026 Officially Becomes the Current Edition

ISO 9001:2026 is now the latest and current edition of the quality management system standard. On ISO’s official website, ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015/Amd 1:2024 are listed as previous editions.

Before its finalization and publication, ISO 9001:2026 went through several development and consultation stages. ARES Vietnam summarized this process in the article Has ISO 9001:2026 Been Published? Latest Progress Update.

Key Changes in ISO 9001:2026

ISO 9001:2026 focuses on clarifying several requirements and refining the management approach to better reflect today’s organizational environment. Key changes include:

  • Leadership and quality culture: The new edition places greater emphasis on leadership, quality culture, accountability, and ethical behavior. These aspects should be reflected in how the organization provides direction and sustains its quality management activities.
  • Risks and opportunities: ISO 9001:2026 provides a clearer distinction between these two areas. This helps organizations manage factors that may affect intended results while proactively identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Stronger alignment between quality management and organizational activities: The new edition strengthens the connection between the QMS, decision-making processes, organizational adaptability, and performance outcomes.
  • Clearer intent of the requirements: Annex A has been expanded to provide further clarification on selected concepts, terminology, and application intent. This supports more consistent understanding and implementation of the requirements.
  • Greater convenience for management system integration: ISO 9001:2026 continues to follow the Harmonized Structure used for ISO management system standards. As a result, organizations can more easily integrate ISO 9001 with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO/IEC 27001, or other management systems.

What Should Organizations Prepare for the Transition?

Transition preparation should focus on the areas that are genuinely affected by the new edition and reflect the current status of the organization’s management system.

1. Conduct a Gap Assessment Against ISO 9001:2026

Organizations should compare the requirements of ISO 9001:2026 with their existing management system. This helps identify requirements already addressed, areas that have been clarified, and elements that require adjustment. The review should be based on the official standard and transition guidance provided by the certification body.

2. Update the Affected Areas

Based on the gap assessment results, organizations can identify the processes, documented information, and operational practices that need to be updated. Existing ISO 9001:2015 documentation can continue to be used where it remains appropriate. The scope of the update should reflect the actual gaps identified against the 2026 edition.

3. Plan the Transition Around the Certification Cycle

Organizations currently certified to ISO 9001:2015 should discuss the transition timing and assessment approach with their certification body.
The transition may be incorporated into a surveillance audit, a recertification audit, or conducted through a separate transition assessment.

4. Leverage an Integrated Management System During the Transition

For organizations operating an Integrated Management System (IMS), ISO 9001:2026 should be reviewed alongside ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or other management system standards currently in use.

Reviewing shared processes allows organizations to coordinate updates, reduce isolated changes, and maintain consistency across management systems.
