International ISO Certification Standards

In today’s business environment, standardization and transparency are essential. Therefore, building a management system aligned with international standards has become a strategic priority. ISO standards are widely applied to standardize management activities and enhance operational performance. This article provides an overview of ISO certification mechanisms and their practical value for organizations.

ISO Management Systems and Adoption Trends

ISO 9001, the Quality Management System standard, was issued in March 1987. It was published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Since then, many countries have adopted and nationalized this standard.

In commercial practice, ISO 9001 certification is often considered a basic transaction requirement. As a result, global adoption continues to expand steadily.

In addition to ISO 9001, other systems are widely implemented. For example, ISO 14001 focuses on environmental management. Similarly, ISO 22000 addresses food safety management.

Since ISO 9001:2015, the standard follows the High Level Structure (HLS). This structure includes ten main clauses. Moreover, ISO 14001 and other standards share this framework. Consequently, organizations can integrate multiple systems more efficiently.

OHSAS 18001 was transitioned into ISO 45001. The new standard was officially issued in March 2018. Likewise, ISO 22000 was revised to align with the unified structure. This alignment ensures consistency across management systems.

Distinguishing “Certification” and “Accreditation”

During ISO registration, two terms are often misunderstood: certification and accreditation.

ISO certification is granted through conformity assessment procedures. These procedures determine whether a management system meets standard requirements.

The process involves three main parties:

  • The organization being evaluated
  • The Certification Body (CB) conducting the audit
  • The Accreditation Body (AB) supervising and recognizing the CB

An organization applies to a CB for certification. However, the CB must be accredited by an AB. This accreditation follows ISO/IEC 17021 requirements. Therefore, competence, impartiality, and credibility are ensured.

Certification refers to third-party confirmation of compliance.

Accreditation confirms that a certification body is competent to certify.

Logos On An ISO Certificate

A valid ISO certificate typically displays:

  • The Certification Body (CB) logo
  • The Accreditation Body (AB) logo
  • In many cases, the IAF logo also appears. IAF stands for the International Accreditation Forum.

Accreditation Bodies operate under the IAF framework. Therefore, certificates bearing the IAF mark receive broader international recognition. This recognition is especially valuable in import and export activities.

Verifying ISO Certificate Validity

Today, online verification is the most reliable method. Organizations should check the Accreditation Body’s official website.

Typically, an ISO certificate remains valid for three years. However, annual surveillance audits are required. Without these audits, the certificate may lose validity.

Benefits of ISO Certification

ISO standards are globally recognized benchmarks. Achieving certification delivers significant advantages:

  • Enhances credibility through independent third-party assessment
  • Promotes continual improvement and operational efficiency
  • Ensure that products and services meet customer requirements.
  • Strengthens relationships with stakeholders
  • Improves risk management and traceability
  • Supports legal compliance and regulatory awareness
  • Increases competitiveness in bidding and procurement
